This was a new build initially with Thomas Vale Construction Ltd prior to Bouygues UK Ltd taking over the contract. The project was valued at £37m with Richmond Care Villages to provide 47 Village apartments offering an independent living – one and two bedroom apartments and 30 Village suites available with one or two bedrooms, which come with some housekeeping assistance. There is also a care home to provide 24-hour nursing and dementia care.
As well as retirement living additional facilities of the development include a wellness spa with swimming pool and gym, hair and beauty salon, library, IT room, terrace café, restaurant and garden bar, all set within beautifully landscaped grounds.
We have developed good working relationships with Richmond Care Villages over the years and now have repeat business for both individual sales and whole schemes.
We were engaged with Richmond Care Villages at an early stage on this project with the design and dealt with all the M&E aspects before the main contractor was involved.
As this was the first Richmond Care Villages new build for 3-4 years they wanted to take on a new direction on the design for the kitchen, café and bar areas. We worked in conjunction with Richmond Care Villages and we developed the designs to incorporate an energy efficient aspect, this included: A full electrical cook suite involving induction hobs and fryers with in-built filtration and Rational combination ovens. We also used Foster refrigerated cabinets and Meiko Gio dishwashers, this was a key design requirement for the client.
The shape of the kitchen was quite challenging and we had to incorporate a lift to transport food to the first and second floor satellite kitchens to cater for the care home aspect of the village. We had to give consideration to the restaurant kitchen to ensure that normal flow was maintained to also serve the village dining room.
Although there were no third party involvements in our design we had to liaise with the Richmond Care Village interior designer on the development of the bar design to ensure our design matched what was intended.
We encountered difficulties with getting the large equipment and serveries up to the first and second floors as there was no internal lift available. After liaising with the contractor they agreed to leave some of the patio doors out from the apartments and constructed a platform on both floors so as to aide their forklift to move the equipment up to the appropriate floors to be installed.
Installation was done over a period of 4 weeks in total staggered through the project programme to suit the requirements of the build.
