GS Group carried out a complete commercial kitchen refurbishment at The Briars Care Home in Sandown, Isle of Wight. At the request of the Greensleeves Care Group, our team was appointed to refurbish the existing kitchen at the award-winning care home.
The Briars care home is widely regarded as one of the best care homes on the island; the home delivers exceptional residential care specialising in dementia care. GS was responsible for the design, supply and installation of equipment within the care home’s commercial kitchen. This was the whole package, including all electrical and mechanical services, ventilation system (canopies, ducts and fans), new ceiling, wall cladding and flooring.
Before commencing the refurb, the client delivered a temporary marquee kitchen to the site, while the care home remained fully operational. A local marquee kitchens company provided the facilities, but it was GS Group who ran all the mechanical and electrical services to the temporary kitchen. As a result, the care home was able to continue to cater to its residents throughout the project.
To minimise the impact of works on the residents and staff, it was crucial that very careful planning was implemented before committing the works.
GS arranged a pre-check site survey with all the trades involved, including the client’s builder, which was then followed up with regular meetings at GS headquarters. Each sequence of the work was put on a schedule, which was then sent to the client and the care home manager for approval.
Five teams were scheduled for the estimated five weeks operation. As one of the five teams, GS Group covered all the mechanical services to the temporary kitchen, disconnecting the existing kitchen and relocating the current appliances to the marquee kitchen. The team also disconnected and removed the old mechanical services, distributed the new mechanical services, installed the new kitchen equipment and commissioned and disconnected the temporary supplies when the schedule had completed.
To transport the new kitchen equipment to site GS used Keith Elkington Transport, to ensure everything was taken to the site at once. While Pioneer Fabrications manufactured and delivered the stainless steel fabrication in minimal lead-time, from the approval of the drawings to the on-site delivery.
During the project, GS Group’s Project Manager was regularly present on-site to supervise the progress and ensure the sequence of the project was being kept to plan. He also provided daily development updates to the care home management and client.
GS Group ensured the designs and installations were completed to the highest possible standard and following the clients’ needs. In doing so, the kitchen was successfully handed over to the kitchen staff on time.
